Physical Education

Students are required to complete 2 semesters of Physical Education courses at Cathedral High School. These courses must be taken at Cathedral during summer school (if offered) or during the regular school year. All students must complete PE I or II before the end of sophomore year, and PE I or II is required to be the first PE course completed. The second PE credit may be PE II, a Strength Training course, other PE electives, or completion of the PE waiver.  Students competing in an IHSAA JV or Varsity sports or a Cathedral club sport may be eligible for the waiver. In order for the waiver to be applied, certain requirements, determined by the PE department chair, must be met.


Health Education (College Prep)

None. Open to freshmen and sophomores.

Course Description:

Analyze the importance of a commitment to lifetime wellness by exploring the effect of health behaviors on one’s quality of life. Exhibit first aid and safety skills, delve into proper nutritional habits, and personal health practices. Analyze universal health issues, such as environmental and community health, and broaden knowledge of emotional and mental health, substance abuse, and disease prevention and control.


Physical Education I (College Prep)

Course Description:

Promote physical activity as a lifetime commitment. Emphasize skill development and application of rules and strategies in the following areas: health-related fitness activities, aerobic exercise, team and individual sports, outdoor pursuits, dance, and recreational games. Active participation in all activities is expected.


Physical Education II (College Prep)

Course Description:

Achieve and maintain a healthy level of physical fitness. Expand knowledge of fitness concepts. Demonstrate skill development and application of rules and strategies in both team and individual sports. Encourage and demonstrate good sportsmanship.


Strength Training (College Prep)

Successful completion of Physical Education I or Physical Education II.

Course Description:

Understand the components of a successful strength training program and build a foundation for proper progression of athletic development. Develop proper mechanics in the most basic movement patterns, while identifying strengths and weaknesses to ensure long-term progress.


Advanced Strength Training (Academic)

Successful completion of two semesters of Strength Training (College Prep).

Course Description:

Perform all movements in the main strength template of the program. Load will continue to be increased. Instill a deep knowledge of all movements, allowing the ability to diagnose errors in movement. Final introduction of Olympic movements, complexes, and derivatives.


Female Strength Training (College Prep)

Female Advanced Strength Training (Academic)

Dance 1 (College Prep)

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Physical Education I or Physical Education II. This course can fulfill PE or Fine Arts credit.

Course Description:

Dance will develop students physically, intellectually, and creatively. Each class will have opportunities to expand student’s knowledge of the history and techniques within different styles of dance – lyrical, jazz, contemporary, tap, musical theater, hip hop, ballet, worship, dance from around the world and more. 


Elective PE: Yoga and Meditation (College Prep)

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Physical Education I or Physical Education II.

Course Description:

Students will be involved in physical activity, strengthen muscles, and release myofascial tissue. Students will learn about the muscles of the body and which are being activated to achieve the asanas (series of movements). Pranayama (mindful breathing) and meditation will create a mindfulness that lends itself to a wonderful reflection and journaling activity. Students will learn the art of moving into stillness. This class will create a strong sense of gratitude and appreciation in one’s life, as well as an increase in self-esteem.


PE Athletic Waiver (College Prep)

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Physical Education I or Physical Education II. Open to sophomores and juniors.

Course Description:

Student-athletes competing in an IHSAA sanctioned sport or Cathedral club sport at the JV or Varsity level may apply for a waiver based on the following criteria: must meet Indiana state standards, must apply for the waiver within the mandated time frame, must finish the season in good standing, and must complete journals and reflection papers throughout the semester. Additional programs in which a student participates in intensive physical training that is individual sport specific and includes competitions (comparable to Olympic training level) may also be eligible for a waiver.
